You Can…
Sell Ice Cubes To Eskimos ...I did.
In the late 70’s, I was the telemarketing manager for a large paper company. There were about a hundred of us on the phones and we were having a particularly bad Friday.
I asked the room to finish their calls. Then I made my call. I had been saving up this idea for a day like this so I could make a point. I knew the area code for Alaska, and just started dialing random numbers and asking “Are you an Eskimo?”
After 7 or 8 calls someone said yes. I explained that there were about 100 people listening to this call. I told him “there was something that I always wanted to do… sell ice cubes to an Eskimo.”
At first there was silence.
Then he started laughing. The whole room was laughing. I sold him a bag of ice cubes on the phone that day.
I just knew it would work.
